In this week’s Business21c Weekly, it’s all red carpets and flash photography, as we talk awards. The finals of the City of Sydney Business Awards are coming up on the 20 September, and we ask what do business awards do for business, and is there anything in it for the customer?

According to our guests, the answer is ‘quite a lot’. Jane Thompson co-owner of Blue Spinach is a past winner and current finalist. Stephen Dyer, owner of Detour Espresso, is also a finalist this year. They take us through the process of entering: the form filling, the customer grooming, and the satisfaction they both clearly get from thinking beyond the daily ‘have the deliveries arrived, and who’s got the cash to pay the wages?’

It’s about building profile and strengthening business networks. But to Jane and Stephen it’s mostly about enriching customer relationships. After all, you don’t win awards by asking people to vote for you. You win because your customers love what you do.

Tina Lonergan and Bill Baggitt of the City of Sydney Business Awards explain how the goals for the awards fit with the broader City of Sydney vision for healthy, vigorous communities and community economies.

Small thinking big: City of Sydney Business Awards

Finalists in the City of Sydney Business Awards have been announced and now the wait is on for the winners announcement on September 20 at the Westin.

Two new categories in the awards this year are Best Small Bar and Best Caf.

Best Small Bar finalist, Absinthesalon in Surry Hills, opened in November and is now booked three weeks in advance. Locals should know that Wednesday, Thursdays and Sundays are the best times for a table.

Run by Joop van Heusden and Gaye Valttila, the Absinthesalon gained approval under new small bar rules championed by Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, which made it easier for boutique watering holes to gain a licence.

The idea was to create a culture of self-regulating niche venues and to steer away from the mega beer barns. “We were on our way to open a bar in Melbourne,’’ Gaye Valttila said.

“It was so expensive to open a bar in Sydney. I think we were just what the Lord Mayor was envisaging when she was thinking about small bars.’‘

On the list of finalists for Best Small Caf is Detour Espresso on William St in Darlinghurst, which has been open for nearly two years and serves coffee to locals, commuters, businessfolk and teens from SCEGGS. “Kids these days are very much more evolved than you or I at that age,’’ owner Stephen Dyer said.
